Residents’ Perception of Changing Local Conditions in the Context of Tourism Development: The Case of Phuket Island

Lack of understanding the ways local subpopulations perceive various changes associated with rapid growth tourism industry may lead to unsustainable development. This study assessed levels and determinants residents’ perception regarding in environmental, sociocultural, economic conditions development Phuket, Thailand. A structured questionnaire survey was conducted 450 residents covering all three districts Phuket Province capture overall indicators detailed sub-indicators perception, whilst factors affecting perceived were examined through ordered logistic regression seemingly unrelated (SUR) analyses. The descriptive statistics showed that unfavorable island such as increased pollution, road accidents, traffic congestion, costs living, while at same time acknowledging importance long-term contribution Moreover, analyses revealed sociodemographic gender, education, residency duration, occupation influenced changing conditions. At sub-indicator level, insights obtained female being more likely positively some availability public space. Implications suggestions for policy design planning are discussed detail.
